RTB 2012: Deltron 3030 spared nothing in performance
Words: Kevin Lee, Pictures: Amari Kenoly / August 26, 2012
Deltron 3030, the team of Del tha Funkee Homosapien, turntable maestro Kid Koala, and producer Dan The Automator, went all out. In an unreliable census held by myself, I counted three trombones players, four backup singers, six strings (including violins and cello), a keyboardist, one guitar/bass player, Kid Koala on the tables, and Dan himself in a tux with the conductor's wand. This is probably the most sprawling setup of the whole festival, and is probably as close as you can get to a Gorillaz show, infamous for their myriad of musicians present. And really, it should be half-expected, considering Dan's involvement in the first Gorillaz album, and Del's own cameo on their first hit, "Clint Eastwood". Together they went though material from their two projects, including the first self-titled Deltron 3030 album and the upcoming Deltron Event II album, scheduled for release in November. And as an added bonus, the set was closed out by a performance of "Clint Eastwood", with only Gorillaz frontman Damon Albarn missing from the lineup.
