Will Smith and Jay-Z back Angela Davis documentary

Will Smith and Jay-Z announced last week their collaborative support of the documentary Free Angela & All Political Prisoners. Directed by Shola Lynch, and now executive produced by Smith’s Overbrook Entertainment and Jay-Z’s Roc Nation, the film chronicles UCLA philosophy professor Angela Davis’ infamous murder trial in the midst of the CIA’s Cointelpro crackdown on black activism in the 1970’s. Free Angela & All Political Prisoners has already received critical recognition, earning a spot as an official selection in this year’s Toronto International Film Festival. Although Smith and Jay were quick to give (well-deserved) love to the film’s heroine, Davis’ story breaks the barriers between history and the present—40 years after her acquittal, Bay Area civil rights activists are still fighting for the freedom of political prisoners who were arrested and illegally extradited to New York in 1973. Check out the trailer below for a preview of the film.
