Show Gallery: Black Star returns to Oakland

Photos: Kevin Lee / March 25, 2013

Despite the relative quiet recently from the two as a duo, Yasiin Bey and Talib Kweli are still Black Star, and they reunited once again to perform in Oakland last Saturday at the Fox Theater. Yasiin, the former Mos Def, made it to the stage despite a rasp in his voice, as strenuous touring had taken a toll. Nevertheless, he made it with Talib on his left, himself coming to the stage with a still steaming cup of tea in his hand along with his trademark old-timey microphone. After the first song, Yasiin also took it upon himself to ask for the stage to be flooded in red, as is his new custom. Together, they both performed favorites from the original Black Star album, along with their better known tracks as solo artists, with some of Yasiin’s newer material that yet to make it to the album presses.
