Show Recap and Gallery: Talib Kweli
April 6, 2011
Talib Kweli and his dapper four piece band crashed the Fillmore Auditorium in San Francisco on Wednesday, in the middle of the west coast leg of his Gutter Rainbows tour. Ostensibly touring to promote his new album, Talib touched upon every album he’s released throughout the show, ending with Nina Simone’s “Sinnerman” after an energetic performance of “Get By,” which sampled Simone’s classic song. Talib put his band to good use with renditions of other songs he sampled for his tracks, including “Sunglasses at Night,” The Beatle’s “Eleanor Rigby,” and the Eurythmics’ “Sweet Dreams.”
Joining Talib on stage were a few guests. Jean Grae, whose outfit could blend in well in Williamsburg or the Mission, also sported some dried blood and a coy smile. Later, Talib’s partner from Idle Warship, Res, joined to sing the woo’s from “Too Late,” from the first Reflection Eternal LP. She stayed behind to indulge herself a bit with a soulful rendition of Fleetwood Mac’s “Dreams,” a cut from her Refried Mac project. The San Francisco crowd not only obliges but cheers her on.
Opening act Fashawn, from the Central Valley of California’s inland, warmed the stage with songs from his debut album, Boy Meets World. And one last note, if you’re a DJ coming into San Fran, while the San Francisco Giants are still World Series Champs, don’t mention you’re from LA. Just sayin.
Talib Kweli and friends will be on tour throughout the country this month and into next month.
